After months of delay, the U.S. Congress finally passed $61 billion in new funding for Ukraine’s war effort on April 23, which Pres. Joe Biden signed the next day. Within hours, the Pentagon announced a $1-billion aid package with critical munitions and vehicles for Ukrainian forces, including an unspecified number of M-2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicles. The 47th Mechanized Brigade, the sole Ukrainian army unit that uses the M-2, was fighting a desperate defensive action against a larger Russian force attacking in eastern Ukraine.
With fresh ammunition and replacement M-2s, the 47th Mechanized Brigade was able to slow the Russian offensive. One particular engagement showcased the effectiveness of the M-2 as an anti-tank weapon, with an M-2 gunner firing a TOW wire-guided missile at a Russian T-80 tank, resulting in a successful kill from a long range.
