A recently published study in the journal Addiction argues that more Americans are using marijuana daily than consuming alcohol on a daily basis. The study, authored by Jonathan Caulkins of Carnegie Mellon University, utilized data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. While more Americans overall drink alcohol than use marijuana, this study suggests that for the first time in history, daily marijuana users outnumber daily alcohol users in the United States. As of 2022, 17.7 million Americans report using marijuana daily or near-daily, compared to 14.7 million who report drinking alcohol daily or almost daily.

Caulkins pointed out that a significant portion of current cannabis users are using the drug daily or near-daily, a pattern more commonly associated with tobacco use rather than alcohol use. Experts warn that excessive use of either substance can be harmful. Dr. Abra Jeffers from Massachusetts General Hospital emphasized that marijuana is not harmless and can be as detrimental to health as smoking tobacco cigarettes. She explained that any level of marijuana use carries risks, with higher frequency of use increasing those risks. This study highlights the potential dangers of daily marijuana consumption and the need for individuals to be cautious in their use of the drug.

The National Cannabis Industry Association has previously stated that cannabis is safer than alcohol, but medical professionals caution that excessive marijuana use can have negative effects on heart health, cognition, and mental health. Dr. Robert Page from the University of Colorado School of Medicine noted that cannabis is not innocent when it comes to cardiovascular health and emphasized the importance of ensuring that individuals are informed about potential risks before using the drug regularly. He also advised cannabis users to be open with their healthcare providers about their use and seek medical approval before using marijuana daily.

It is crucial for individuals to have open and non-judgmental conversations with their healthcare providers about their cannabis use and to engage in shared decision-making when it comes to using the drug daily. Being transparent about marijuana use and seeking medical guidance can help individuals make informed choices about their health and well-being. By understanding the potential risks associated with regular marijuana consumption, individuals can better protect themselves and mitigate any negative effects on their health. This study sheds light on the growing trend of daily marijuana use in the United States and underscores the importance of approaching cannabis consumption with caution and awareness of potential risks.
