    “Understandings” between Haftar and Al-Dabaiba to secure the Libyan elections

    Informed Libyan sources revealed “understandings” between the National Army, led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, and Abdel Hamid al-Dabaiba, head of the (interim) unity government. To coordinate security and military cooperation between the two sides, in preparation for holding and securing the postponed presidential and parliamentary elections this year.

    The sources told Asharq Al-Awsat, “These understandings are the result of (undeclared) meetings recently held outside Libya between representatives of Haftar and al-Dabaiba,” noting that, according to these understandings, “the al-Dabaiba government will accelerate the dismantling and integration of armed groups and militias within its apparatus.” Security and military, in accordance with the conditions of the army, which exclude all (terrorists) or those involved in terrorist acts, from joining these agencies.

    The sources refused to disclose the place and timing of these meetings and the identity of the participants. However, it clarified that, according to what was agreed upon, “the National Army will allow the Ministry of Interior, in the government of Dbeibeh, to gradually take over security work in the eastern and southern regions that are under the control of the army.
