Yesterday, Germany gave the green light to send Leopard heavy combat tanks to Ukraine, thus ending days of controversy and hesitation, in a move that was widely welcomed by Ukraine and the West, and it is expected that the “Ukraine war” will enter a new phase.
Kyiv described the move as the “Great Alliance of Tanks,” hoping that countries whose armies possess this type of weapon will provide them with it in the near future.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a speech before the parliament (Bundestag) that it was important to “wait for the allies and make a decision in coordination with them,” noting that any single step would have “endangered Germany’s security,” pledging that “there will be no direct participation on the part of other countries.” The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in the Ukraine war.
Scholz indicated that the allied countries, such as Britain, France and the United States, agreed to form an alliance to send advanced Western-made combat tanks to Ukraine.
In coordination with Washington’s allies, US President Joe Biden also ordered the dispatch of 31 Abrams tanks to enhance Ukraine’s capabilities. He said that they are complex tanks, but that we will start training Ukrainian forces to operate them and ensure that they are able to integrate them into their capabilities.
Biden stressed that the Western tanks that the United States and its allies decided to provide Ukraine with to confront the Russian invasion “do not constitute an offensive threat to Russia,” and stressed that sending the American “Abrams” and German “Leopard” tanks to Ukraine falls within the framework of “the commitment of countries around the world.” The world, led by the United States, is helping Ukraine to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The decision sparked anger in Moscow, which warned the West against “taking the conflict to a new level.” The Kremlin called the development a “flagrant provocation” and vowed to “burn Western tanks”.
And the deputy head of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, returned to hinting at the worst and the nuclear option for his country, and issued a strong warning to “the leaders of the United States and Germany to stop the ticking of the nuclear clock.” He said he calls on Biden and Schultz to show wisdom and stop the slide towards a global catastrophe.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, who avoided directly addressing the issue of tanks, attacked the American presence in Germany, describing it as an “occupation.”
