A policeman died of his injuries after being attacked with a knife Thursday evening in Brussels, the Belgian capital’s prosecutor announced.
A judicial source told AFP that there was a “suspect” of a “terrorist” motive, but investigators must gather the elements to confirm this. The suspect was injured and taken to hospital.
The same source clarified that the investigation is being led at this stage by the Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office and not by the Belgian Federal Prosecutor’s Office specialized in organized crime and terrorism cases.
The attack took place around 19:15 (1815 GMT) in the La Gare du Nord district of the Schaerbeek district of Brussels. For a reason that is not yet clear, a man armed with a knife attacked two policemen and stabbed them.
The latter two called for reinforcements, and a policeman from another patrol used his firearm to “neutralize the aggressor.”
According to a number of media outlets, the suspect was shot in the legs and abdomen, and was taken to hospital with the two injured policemen. The late policeman sustained injuries to the neck.
