Abdullahian meets Assad and supports “normalization” with Arab countries
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir Abdollahian, during their meeting in Damascus yesterday, gave priority to accelerating “the implementation of bilateral agreements, especially in the economic and commercial fields.” The Iranian minister also supported “normalization” between Damascus and Arab capitals.
The official Syrian News Agency (SANA) reported that the meeting, which took place in Damascus, dealt with “intensifying work to strengthen the joint ties that bring together the Syrian and Iranian peoples to serve their interests and enhance their steadfastness.” The meeting also dealt with the continuation of cooperation between the two countries in the field of combating terrorism, where Abdullahian reiterated his country’s support for Syria and its people until the liberation of all Syrian territories. She added that Abdullahian “considered Syria’s exercise of its important role for the sake of stability in the region.”
After the meeting, the Iranian minister said that his country is satisfied with what the Arab countries are doing and the “new approach to normalizing relations with Syria,” expressing his hope for a meeting between Assad and his Iranian counterpart Ibrahim Raisi in the near future.
Abdullahian had said upon his arrival in Damascus on his second visit to his position, that Damascus and Tehran are “in one trench” and that “the strategic relations between the two countries are going through the best conditions,” noting that “the economic issue is at the forefront of priorities.”
For his part, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad said that “there is coordination between the two countries to avoid the brutality of the Western sanctions”, which were imposed on Damascus due to the suppression of protests and violations during 11 years of conflict.
