France coach Didier Deschamps said today, Monday, that Mike Maignan will become the first choice goalkeeper for the national team after the retirement of captain Hugo Lloris after the 2022 World Cup, but he has not named a new captain yet.
Lloris retired from international football after France lost the World Cup final to Argentina last December, leaving the first-choice goalkeeper and captaincy vacant.
“Mike Mainan will become the number one goalkeeper,” said Deschamps, who also called up Alphonse Areola and Brice Samba, in a press conference before Friday’s match in the European Championship 2024 qualifier against the Netherlands at the Stade de France International.
The 27-year-old Milan goalkeeper missed the World Cup finals due to injury, while Samba, a Lens player, was called up for the first time.
But Deschamps did not say who would wear the armband amid discussions about whether Kylian Mbappe, the PSG captain in the absence of the injured Marquinhos, would lead the team after Lloris.
“I will make the decision in the coming days,” he said. There will be a new driving system. Among the 23 players, there will be a captain and a vice-captain. It is something that should happen naturally. He will always be in the interest of the team.”
France will play in Group Two with the Netherlands, Gibraltar, Greece and Ireland, which they will face in Dublin on March 27.
