Ticket sales for the tournament are approaching three million before the prestigious event kicks off on November 20, Gianni Infantino, president of the International Football Association (FIFA) and the World Cup organizers said on Monday.
Colin Smith, Executive Director of World Cup 2022 Operations, said at a press conference in Doha that Qatar, the host, the United States and Saudi Arabia are the most awarded tickets for the tournament, with 2.89 million tickets sold so far.
Addressing the press conference, Infantino said in a recorded video that 240,000 hospitality packages have been sold for the month-long tournament, which is being held for the first time in the Middle East.
Qatar is preparing to receive about 1.2 million visitors during the World Cup.
Thousands of fans are expected to stay in neighboring countries such as the UAE, which is a major tourist hub, and will travel to Doha to watch matches due to its proximity to Qatar.
Yasser Al-Jammal, Director-General of the Organizing Committee for the World Cup in Qatar, said during the press conference that two million hotel nights were sold, and that Qatar added 30,000 additional rooms to accommodate ticket sales at the last minute.
Football teams and support staff as well as World Cup officials will occupy many hotel rooms in Doha.
Smith said Japan will be the first team to reach the tournament on November 7.
