Fairuz’s Childhood Home Survived Wars, Threatened by Neglect

The Lebanese culture ministry launched an initiative in May last year to turn the ancient Beirut house, where Fairuz lived during her childhood, into a museum. However, neglect is still obvious in the house’s walls and features, according to the Arab News Agency (ANA).

The legendary singer lived her childhood in that house, located in Zekak Al Blat, in the heart of Beirut. She left when she turned 20, after she married Assi Rahbani in 1955.

The house was built in the early 19th century during the Ottoman rule. Despite its small area of 100 square metres, heritage experts believe that the house is of a great cultural and historic value for Lebanon.

The house survived the brutal events in Lebanon, the civil war in 1975, and the Beirut Port blast in 2020, which destroyed and damaged thousands of buildings.

But experts fear the collapse of the house due to neglect.
