Defusing the “judicial bombing” in Lebanon

The Lebanese judicial body was able to defuse the “fuse of explosion” that was threatening it as a result of the mutual lawsuits between the Public Prosecutor, Judge Ghassan Oweidat, and the judicial investigator in the Beirut port explosion, Judge Tariq Al-Bitar, as Al-Bitar violated all expectations yesterday (Monday) and postponed the investigation sessions that he had set for days. February for an indefinite period. Al-Bitar’s presence in his office at the Palace of Justice in Beirut yesterday (Monday) did not take more than one hour, which he devoted to informing the parties to the case of postponing his investigations.

Al-Bitar took a step back, preceded by intensive contacts over the weekend, which were undertaken by the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Suhail Abboud, with Al-Bitar, Oweidat, and Caretaker Minister of Justice Henry Al-Khoury, to defuse tension and prevent the judicial situation from blowing up on a large scale. A prominent judicial source revealed to Asharq Al-Awsat that Judge Abboud “wants a complete solution to the investigation crisis that does not break the judicial investigator and does not embarrass the discriminatory public prosecutor.”

In Paris, “white smoke” did not leave the headquarters of the French Foreign Ministry, which hosted yesterday afternoon the “French-American-Saudi-Egyptian-Qatari” five-party meeting devoted to Lebanon. The main issue that the Lebanese wanted dealt with the ways, means, and methods available to push the Lebanese political class to work according to an integrated “package” aimed at filling the institutional void, electing a new president for the republic, and understanding regarding the image of a new government.
