British pop star Dua Lipa obtains citizenship of her native country

Albanian President Bayram Begai on Sunday granted Albanian citizenship to British-born pop star Dua Lipa, the daughter of Kosovo and Albanian parents who fled conflict and political turmoil in the Balkans.
President Begay said that Lipa obtained citizenship before the 110th anniversary of Albania’s independence from the Ottoman Empire, noting that it was an honor because she made Albanians famous all over the world through her music.
Before taking the oath of citizenship in the Albanian capital, Tirana, Lipa said, “I will be Albanian and I have papers as well.” She expressed her joy at obtaining the nationality of her motherland, and shared a series of photos on her Instagram page, commenting, “Thank you to President Bayram Begay and Mayor Arion Vilag for this honor. I got Albanian citizenship… Thank you, I feel very proud.”
In turn, Villaj, the mayor of the Albanian capital, shared a video of Lipa taking the oath to obtain her mother’s nationality, expressing his pride in her, and publishing pictures of her gathering with her, while handing over official documents, during the oath and her presence in the street among people, and commented, “Welcome to Dua Lipa in Albania. Today I am happy to celebrate your oath and your citizenship. I am happy to see a girl like you, noble, talented and proud of her roots.”
Her sister, Rina Lipa, was the first to congratulate and comment on her page with a group of red hearts. The Albanian singer, Dorata Dora, also expressed her pride in Liba, commenting, “Proud.” Her page was filled with supportive comments confirming that she deserves success and pride in her and her art, which has reached all countries of the world and brought Albanian music with it.
Lipa was born in London on August 22, 1995, and began singing at the age of five, influenced by her father, a former singer and guitar player in a rock band. At the age of 14, she began posting her songs on YouTube, and released her first studio album in 2017. In 2019, she won the Grammy Award for Best New Artist.
