The “airship” hangs over the atmosphere of the “State of the Union” speech
US President Joe Biden stands before a divided Congress today for the first time since the Republicans took over the majority in the House of Representatives, at a time when the country is facing internal and external challenges, and the US President is approaching the decisive hour, regarding his running for the presidency again.
And instead of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Biden will sit behind the new Speaker of the House, Republican Kevin McCarthy, along with his deputy, Kamala Harris. McCarthy will represent the Republican face challenging Biden in several files, most notably the internal files, starting with the file of raising the public debt ceiling, passing through Biden’s secret documents, and ending with the immigration file.
The speech coincides with the intensification of US efforts to support Ukraine, but there is no doubt that the biggest file Biden is currently facing is the Chinese balloon crisis. The Republicans are angry at the administration’s handling of this file, and Biden will have to present his approach in detail to the disgruntled lawmakers. The latest reaction came from the leader of the Republicans in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, who said that “China mocked our airspace.”
