A campaign that has shown excellent results over 35 years, or World Tobacco Day, celebrated on May 31, awaits a new challenge: the electronic cigarette. The data was established by the countries that are members of the World Health Organization (WHO), in 1988.
From lá to cá, the number of smokers fell drastically not in Brazil. At the time, 35% of two Brazilians smoked, an index that fell to 9% according to the director of the Tobacco Treatment Program of the Heart Institute, Jaqueline Scholz.
In adolescents, the initiation rate for non-conventional cigarettes ranges between 6% and 7%, but the greatest concern became electronic smoking, which is now part of the routine of 5% of this group, also according to the cardiologist and professor of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (USP).
“When the industry saw that the conventional cigarette was a dead product from a marketing point of view, it thought about alternatives”, stated Jaqueline Scholz in an interview with CNNalleging that the hookahs began to attract young people for their different flavors and the false idea that they were less harmful to health.
“Now the industry has transferred this concept to the electronic cigarette. I always invite people to come into contact with nicotine, which is a highly addictive substance. E dessa jumper to experience different flavors, when você vê já is flawed.”
The teacher alleges that now, due to financial difficulties in accessing the electronic cigarette, the conventional cigarette becomes an alternative. From the substantial point of view, the difference is that electronic smoking does not contaminate the lungs of its users with carbon monoxide, but provides a level of nicotine that frightens the doctor.
“I tore my hair, because users aged 13 and 14 years old have doses of nicotine in the urine and have never seen – in 30 years of combating tobacco use – dessaidad gastroenteritis with a nicotine level that does not bleed, equivalent to smoking 20 cigarettes,” says Jaqueline. Scholz. “How can I prove that this is a damage reduction policy? This is a policy of incorporation of intense and rapid dependency, it is absurd.”
The director of the Tobacco Treatment Program of the Instituto do Coração lembrou who, highly addicted, has discussed methods and treatments to quit the cigarette in three months.
Jaqueline Scholz recommends that smokers who want to quit or habit seek specialists, who can offer techniques to discontinue the habit, along with withdrawal medications.
