Ukraine is ready to launch its long-awaited counteroffensive in the war against Russia, says Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in an interview with The Wall Street Journal.
“Acho that, as of today, we are ready for isso. We would like to have certain things, but we cannot wait for that for months”, said Zelensky about the highly anticipated military maneuvers.
The president has confirmed that the counteroffensive will be successful, but he does not know for sure how long it will take.
“Everyone knows perfectly well that any counteroffensive in the world without control over us is very dangerous. Imagine what a military man feels, knowing that he does not have a ‘teto’ and cannot understand how the vizinhos countries are so”, says Zelensky about his obstinate campaign by allies to supply F-16 fighters to Ukraine.
According to the WSJ, Zelensky acknowledged Russia’s superiority to us, adding that a lack of protection against Russian air power means that “a large number of soldiers will die” during a counteroffensive.
“If everyone knows that we need protection for our eyes, so what is the problem in (us) modern jets? What is the problem?”, he implored.
About NATO
Zelensky said that he understood that Ukraine would not be able to join NATO as long as its war against Russia continues: “We don’t want to be in NATO during the war. It’s too late now. We should have been there before”.
All NATO allies agree that “Ukraine will become a member of the alliance”, said NATO Secretary-General, Jens Stoltenberg, at the fifth fair, before the next summit of the alliance, which should take place in Vilnius, Lithuania, in July 11 and 12.
Zelensky, who hopes to guarantee the leadership that Ukraine can join NATO after the war, told the WSJ: “If some countries do not see us in NATO and we do not receive a signal in Vilnius, something that does not make sense for Ukraine to be in this leadership .”
When asked if this sign would be given, Zelensky replied: “I don’t know. I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know.”
