The Minister of the Environment, Marina Silva, guaranteed that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will veto a section of the MP da Mata Atlântica that makes it difficult to protect the biome.
A provisional measure was approved this week by the Chamber of Deputies.
The president’s intention is to amend the text that allows the installation of power transmission lines, gas pipelines and the public water supply system in Mata without a prior environmental impact study or compensation.
“This is what we need,” the minister said in a video on social networks that highlighted the importance of the Atlantic Forest and its diversity.
“The protection and restoration of the Atlantic Forest is essential not only for the survival of the species that inhabit it, but also for the quality of life of the human communities that depend on two resources and services that it offers in the preservation of biodiversity”, he completed.
The permission had been included in the text by the Chamber, during the MP’s first analysis, but this section had been removed by measure by the senators, as an argument that the changes could trace risks to the biome and escape from the theme of the original text, or that It is called in the Congress of “jabuti”.
