The Constitutional Court of Equador declared, in this fourth fair (30), that the impeachment hearings against President Guillermo Lasso, requested by opposition parliamentarians for alleged corruption in state companies, can continue.
A decision could make it more likely that Lasso dissolves the assembly and calls early elections for his position and seats for parliamentarians.
Lasso vemently denies the accusations.
Understand or case
At the beginning of this month, parliamentarians supported a report accusing Lasso of connections with possible crimes against State security and public administration, in the midst of investigations by the attorney general’s office on alleged bribes in state companies.
The congressmen will also vote to withdraw the secrecy of files related to corruption investigations in search of evidence to support the impeachment attempt, but neither Lasso nor his relatives will appear in the documents.
The formal request, presented by a parliamentarian from the party of ex-president Rafael Correa, has 59 nominations for support.
“This accusation will be shown how President Guillermo Lasso Mendoza participated in a corruption structure to obtain benefits for himself and for others,” said the request.
In the statement, the government rejects the effort.
“This request completely lacks political and legal elements that would support a process against the president,” said the government, adding that the effort is an attempt to “destabilize” on the part of the assembly.
The proponents need the approval of the constitutional court for an impeachment trial to take place.
