At the event in Rio de Janeiro at this fifth fair (23), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) turned to criticize the Central Bank (BC) and its leader, Roberto Campos Neto.
“I have to take care of Campos Neto and the Senate that indicated it. He was not elected by the people, he was not appointed by the president, he was appointed by the Senate”, he affirmed, adding that “when he had [Henrique] Meirelles”, he spoke as the then president of BC.
“If this city wants to, you don’t need to talk to me. The only thing to comply with is the law that establishes the autonomy of the Central Bank.”
The president is visiting the Itaguaí Naval Complex, in Rio, to learn about the Brazilian Navy Submarine Development Program (ProSub).
The declaration occurs one day after the decision of the BC to maintain the Selic tax at 13.75% aa – a movement that could incense the fall of arms between the monetary authority and the federal government over or to establish two jurisdictions in the country.
As long as the BC follows the book-text of the system of targets for inflation, which imposes high promises when the expectations for the behavior of two prices are longer than the objective, or the government defends a tax reduction to revive the economy.
For Lula, the president of the BC must “take care of the monetary policy, of employment, of inflation and of the income of the povo”.
“It is so that it is in the law”, affirmed the president, who was questioned by a journalist from the event if Campos Neto would not be doing this.
“Everyone knows that he is not doing it, if he is doing it, he is not complaining. I am not stupid to complain about a good thing ”, he replied.
In an interview with the left-wing portal 247, Lula affirmed that the current path of Selic is an “absurd” and hardly pleases the financial system.
“There is no reason, no explanation, no logic. Only that it agrees with high oaths is the financial system, that survives and lives by disso and earns a lot of money with speculations”, said the president.
