Biden will have to meet Xi Jinping in the future, says Councilor of Casa Branca

The North American president, Joe Biden, “at some point” will meet with the Chinese president Xi Jinping, according to the National Security Counselor of the White House, Jake Sullivan, while the two countries work together to restore normal relations in between An extremely tumultuous and tense year of non-relationship.

“We will see in the coming months, I hope, the American authorities in high-level talks with their Chinese colleagues to continue this work. And then, at some point, we will see either President Biden or President Xi meet again,” Sullivan told Fareed Zakaria, da CNNin an interview with the “GPS” that was held this Sunday(4).

“There is nothing incompatible with, on the one hand, competing vigorously in important domains of the economy and technology and also ensuring that this competition does not turn into conflict or confrontation. This is the firm conviction of President Biden”, added Sullivan.

Sullivan’s remarks come at a time when relations between the world’s two largest economies remain tense.

The Chinese defense minister accused the United States and its allies on Sunday of attempting to destabilize the Indo-Pacific region – a few hours after the US said that a Chinese warship crossed in front of an American ship that was participating in an exercise together with the Canadian Navy in the Taiwan Strait, forcing the American vessel to slow down to avoid a collision.

The incident marks the second time in two weeks that the Chinese military has engaged in aggressive actions in the vicinity of the US military near the border with China.

A Chinese fighter carried out an “unnecessarily aggressive move” during the interception of a US spy plane in international airspace over the South China Sea last week, the US military said at the terça-feira (30).

Tensions between Washington and Beijing flared up in February, after which an alleged Chinese spy gun flew over the continental territory of the United States and was subsequently shot down by the American military. The incident brought the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, to say goodbye to a planned trip to Beijing.

Embora a trip has not yet been highlighted, the State Department announced on Saturday (3) that the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs is traveling to China this week “to discuss key issues in bilateral relations.”

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang said in May that a “series of wrong words and actions” between the United States placed relations between two superpowers in “cold ice,” but stabilizing ties was a “top priority.” .

In the midst of the US’s efforts to reconnect with China, Sullivan met with top Chinese official Wang Yi in Vienna recently, in two of the highest-level engagements between American and Chinese authorities since the spyball incident.

There is a desire, says Sullivan, to “place a boy in the relationship” to manage the competition between them with more responsibility.

“There are several different niso elements. More than two principals is that, as we have intense competition, we also have intense diplomacy, ”he said.

Even in the middle of May, Biden was optimistic that he would eventually meet his Chinese colleague “seja em breve o não.” The two leaders will meet for the last time in November at the G20 leadership in Bali, Indonesia, for a three-hour talk that Biden later described as “open and frank.”

    Ukrainian counteroffensive

While there, Sullivan also told Zakaria that the US confirms that the long-awaited Ukrainian counteroffensive will result in the retake of “strategically significant territory” by kyiv.

“Exactly how much, in which places, will depend on non-terrain developments, as the Ukrainians will initiate this counteroffensive,” Sullivan said. “But we believe that the Ukrainians will be successful.”

Asked about the possibility of this event implying some type of negotiation by the end of this year, Sullivan did not provide any type of timetable, but said that developments on the battlefield will have a “big impact” on any future negotiations.

“But what will I say next: President Zelensky himself says that this war will end through diplomacy,” Sullivan said.

The Ukrainian military has been seen moving military equipment to the front lines of its conflict with Russia and carrying out attacks against some Russians that could facilitate an offensive, including recent attacks on the southern port city of Berdiansk, occupied by Russians.

A senior official from the United States confirmed CNN In May, Ukraine had begun to conduct modeling operations before a counteroffensive against the Russian forces.

Modeling involves reaching things like weapons depots, command centers, and armor and artillery systems to prepare the battlefield for the advance of the forces.
