The Association of Relatives of Victims and Survivors of the Tragedy of Santa Maria (AVTSM) affirmed that it does not agree with the group of relatives of victims of the Boat Kiss fire that intends to prosecute Netflix for the series “Todo Dia a Mesma Noite”.
On this Sunday (29), lawyer Juliane Muller Korbm reported on CNN that a group of about 40 families have hired to represent them in a case against a streaming platform on behalf of what they call “exploração comercial da tragédia”.
In a statement released by Instagram, the president of AVTSM, Gabriel Rovadoschi Barros, clarified that the association was aware of the production and “felt-is represented” both by the series and by the homonymous book that served as a base, the journalist Daniela Arbex.
“The production does not individually portray the 242 assassinated youths, but rather a cut of the four families from the country that were prosecuted. All relatives of victims and survivors portrayed by personages of the work are cient and in agreement”, he affirms in a note.
AVTSM informed that it is not moving any process against the productions and that there is no such claim, “for accrediting the power of the productions in the fight for justice and the fight for memory.”
We believe, above all, that tragedies such as those we experience need to be told through all forms. Retelling this story means denouncing the countless negligence and attempts to silence that we find along the way, as well as helping in prevention so that this type of tragedy does not happen with more children, something that we have as our goal since the 1st day of our foundation. To show what happened in Kiss face how the death of our sons and daughters, brothers and sisters, country and friends, friends and friends had not been in vain. Show delinquencies, bureaucracy and how the Brazilian judicial system serves as a complaint and as a protest. It is necessary to talk, debate, produce material about what happened on that tragic night of January 27, 2013, for this is the only way we will get people to understand what they are capable of doing through profit, negligence and omission. In Santa Maria, these factors killed 242 young people and left 636 with physical and psychological marks.

The president of the association still clarifies that there is no financial review from Netflix to AVTSM on account of the production: “What we won is the crença no fortificamento in the fight for justice and for memory. So that it doesn’t happen again.”
A CNN I sought out the Netflix advisory to comment on the case, but I have not returned.
