Viseu will be European City of Sport in 2024

The Association of European Capitals and Cities of Sport (ACES Europe) declared Viseu a European City of Sport in 2024, in an official communication sent today to the municipality, announced its president, Fernando Ruas.

“It is with great pride that Viseu receives this communication and officially assumes itself as European City of Sport 2024”, said the mayor, Fernando Ruas.

According to the mayor, it is “a unique opportunity for the municipality, for its community of associations, clubs and athletes who, over the years, have worked hard to prove their worth, with positive results inside and outside doors”.

“We will be able to show even more our value and potential as a European stage of sport and physical activity”, he stressed.

The announcement was made after, last week, observers from ACES Europe and ACES Portugal visited the city of Viseu.

“Congratulations on this award, because your city is, in fact, a good example of sport for all, as an instrument of health, integration, education and respect, which are the main objectives of ACES Europe”, said the president and founder of this association, Gian Francesco Lupattelli, adding that Viseu has developed “an exemplary sports policy, with programs and activities”.

Viseu succeeds Viana do Castelo, with the official announcement ceremony scheduled for the end of the year, at the European Parliament, in Brussels.
