As the governments in Washington and Mexico City announced, US authorities can in future deport Venezuelans who have entered illegally to Mexico. At the same time, the US wants to allow the legal entry of up to 24,000 migrants from Venezuela under certain conditions. The United States recently took in thousands of refugees from Ukraine using a similar process.
This is to stop illegal migration. Legal entry is the only acceptable route, said US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. Unauthorized border crossings would close the door to an admissions process.
According to the ministry, four times as many Venezuelans were intercepted at the border this year as in the previous year. The agreement provides for easier entry into the United States for Venezuelans who are not yet in Mexico, the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. In return, Mexico will allow deportations from the United States for a limited time.
According to the Panamanian migration authorities, more than 150,000 people, most of them from the crisis-ridden Venezuela, have crossed the Darién jungle between Panama and Colombia in the past nine months. That’s a record number. In 2021 there were 134,000 migrants throughout the year, a year earlier 8594.
Six million refugees from Venezuela
The migrants leave their homes mainly because of poverty, political instability, natural disasters or crime and hope for a better life in the USA.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken speaks with migrants from Venezuela in Colombia in early October

This emerges from a report by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN refugee agency UNHCR. Therefore
Despite the progress made through various initiatives in the region, better protection of migrants and access to care and work are needed.
