The body of one of the fighters still cannot be found.
The humanitarian mission “On the Shield” is already working in the liberated territories – they are engaged in searching for missing soldiers, taking away bodies and remains. The TSN camera crew witnessed one of the search operations in Donetsk region – seven fighters were ambushedthe Russians drove over them with vehicles, and then drove a grader into the road – this happened in August of last year, but one of the missing is still being searched for.
Rubble instead of houses and trees cut as if with a slant – this is what the so-called Sherwood forest looks like, a place near Svyatogorsk, where people came as a resort. Now a group of the humanitarian project “On the Shield” is working here, they are looking for and taking out the fallen soldiers, and this should be done as soon as possible.
They already worked at this place 9 months ago, when the fighting was still going on. “Visually, we collected them, we thought we had collected all of them, because there were 7 bodies, but it turned out that one is missing, and we are going with search dogs to look for another one,” says Andrii Chernyavskyi, the head of the search group.
Seven fighters were ambushed in August, a cross was erected in their memory by their comrades, but the men have not been buried yet. “We wanted to come here in the spring, but they didn’t let us rain,” the searchers say.
In front of the searchers are the sappers, and behind them is the dog Hanna, who spends half her life looking for both living people under the rubble and, as on this occasion, the dead. After a few meters of searching, Hanna gives the first mark. But it turns out to be only blood-soaked land, because Russian criminals mixed the bodies of the murdered with the soil. “The most difficult job is to collect the remains, if cars drove over them, and then they also walked with a grader,” – say the searchers.
Only at the third place where Hanna stopped, the first find is a small bone on the road, which gives great hope for the family to finally bury their warrior with dignity. Human remains are found nearby in the grass. “We do not tie them to the fighter we are looking for. It can be the remains of one person or the remains of several,” the group explains.
The brothers of the missing 7th soldier still hope that he will be captured. “According to my practice, 50 percent become dead, and 50 percent are servicemen whom we find in captivity and return them,” says soldier Serhiy, whose brothers are being sought.
During further searches, a fragment of the skull and rain-washed belongings of one of the dead were found. “They found a cross, they found a phone, and they found a token in the phone,” searchers show the token of an already identified fallen soldier.
On just one road in the forest, Hanna pointed out a dozen places in a few hours. The search party puts everything found in a white bag, the expedition must return. But having gathered, they find more bones and a burnt helmet. All this will go to the DNA examination, which will also last more than a month. There is no guarantee that the fighter, who was so sought after, was still found after all these efforts. But every day, this and other groups repeatedly go to the battlefields, look for improvised burials, inspect the fields from quadcopters, walk dozens of kilometers through forests, so that everyone will definitely return home one day.
