(CNN) — The Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid received a “bloody” package on Friday, similar to those recently received at other Ukrainian diplomatic institutions, the spokesman for the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, Oleh Nikolenko, said on Facebook.
Receiving this suspicious package at the Embassy prompted an immediate evacuation, but a Spanish police bomb squad determined the package did not contain explosives, the press office of Spain’s Interior Ministry said in a statement.
“The fact that its postmark is not from Spain, together with its characteristics, could link it to packages that have been intercepted at other Ukrainian embassies and consulates in different European countries,” says the statement from the Ministry of the Interior.
Ukraine’s foreign minister told CNN in an exclusive interview that a series of letters containing explosives or animal parts are aimed at terrorizing Ukrainian diplomats around the world.
“This campaign is aimed at spreading fear and terrorizing Ukrainian diplomats,” Dmytro Kuleba told CNN’s Matthew Chance in Kyiv on Friday.
Kuleba said there were 17 cases of embassies receiving letter bombs, fake letter bombs or letters containing animal parts, such as the eyes of cows and pigs.
Ukraine has placed all embassies and consulates abroad under heightened security after a series of incidents involving threatening packages, letter bombs and vandalism against its diplomatic missions. This week, the Ukrainian embassies in Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, Italy and Austria, along with several Ukrainian consulates, received bloody packages containing animal eyes, Nikolenko said on Facebook on Friday.
Friday’s was the second evacuation of the Ukrainian embassy in Madrid this week, just two days after a letter bomb went off when an embassy employee tampered with it and was slightly injured, Spanish officials said.
“It started with an explosion at the Ukrainian embassy in Spain,” Kuleba said. “But what followed that explosion was more bizarre, and I would even say sick.”
Asked who he thought was behind the cards, he said: “I am tempted to name Russia right away, because first of all you have to answer the question, who benefits?”
That was one of a series of letter bombs received in recent days at the official compound of the Spanish prime minister, the US Embassy in Madrid and other high-profile Spanish addresses, Spanish officials said.
