According to a report from the statistical service of the Ministry of the Interior (SSMSI) published Tuesday, January 31, the number of almost all crimes and offenses recorded by the security forces in France increased in 2022 compared to the previous year. The number of victims of domestic violence (+ 17%) and sexual violence (+ 11%) is among the most significant increases, according to figures from the ministry which constitute a “first snapshot” of the acts committed last year.

Increases in the number of victims of recorded homicides (948, i.e. 69 victims more than in 2021, according to still provisional data), intentional assault and battery, sexual violence and scams “continue those observed before the health crisis”notes the SMSSI.

    Burglaries “below their pre-crisis level”

As for thefts without violence, burglaries, thefts of vehicles or vehicle accessories, they remain “below their pre-crisis level, with the exception of vehicle accessory thefts”although the SSMSI notes that they “will increase significantly in 2022” after having “strongly declined during the health crisis” Of all the crimes and misdemeanors counted, only violent thefts are down (-4%), continuing a “regular decrease started in 2013”.

The sharp increases observed at the national level for intentional assault and battery on people over the age of fifteen, for sexual violence and for the theft of accessories from registered vehicles are found in almost all regions or departments. Paris and Seine-Saint-Denis (for the decrease in violent thefts without weapons), Bouches-du-Rhône (for the increase in thefts from vehicles) and the North (for the increase in thefts of accessories from vehicles ) are among the departments that have the most influence on the national indicators.
