(CNN Spanish) — Fernando Báez Sosa’s father treasures an audio that his son sent him during his trip to Villa Gesell, where he later died after being brutally beaten by a group of young people. “I have him very close to me when I hear his voice,” he told CNN en Español on Monday, after the court ruling against the eight responsible.
“I have an audio that he sent me during the trip to the coast, which he left me, and I keep it very close. I review it almost every week because I am afraid that it will be erased,” Silvino Sosa said shortly after a court sentenced five of the eight defendants for the murder of his son to life imprisonment and another three to 15 years in prison.
In addition, he said, he also has many videos of Fernando Báez Sosa playing soccer and saves the messages that were sent. “Sometimes I open his phone, I read his messages that we had together. That’s very hard but it also strengthens me a lot.”
Fernando Báez Sosa, a young law student, died in the early morning of January 18, 2020 as he was leaving a dance venue in the seaside resort of Villa Gesell, located 380 km from Buenos Aires, as a result of the attack with beatings from punched and kicked by a gang of several rugby players.
Since then, the demands for justice have multiplied. On Monday, finally, the Dolores Oral Criminal Court No. 1 issued its verdict.
Fernando Báez Sosa’s chain that accompanied him
During the trial, Báez carried with him a chain that belonged to his son. In the dialogue with CNN en Español, he explained that, as far as he knew, the chain broke when he was pushed during the discussion inside the bowling alley.
“After a long time,” a boy from the interior who had found it sent it to the young man’s parents, he said. The chain was broken and he had it fixed.
“From time to time I use it, not every time, I brought it especially for this trial. I wore it throughout the trial,” he said.
The chain has a cross that had been given to Fernando Báez Sosa at the Catholic school he attended. “An arm of the cross was broken from the use it has, the first day they gave it to him and he never took it off,” the father recalled.
