An earthquake of 4.4 on the Richter scale occurred on March 22, 2023 and was felt in southern Alsace. According to the National Seismic Monitoring Network, the epicenter is near Belfort.
Your office certainly wobbled a little this afternoon. An earthquake measuring 4.4 on the Richter scale was recorded on Wednesday March 22, 2023 around 3:50 p.m. The phenomenon lasted 34 seconds and was felt as far as Alsace, in particular in the Haut-Rhin.
The epicenter is near Belfort in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, according to the French Central and Seismological Bureau – National Seismic Monitoring Network. 22 km from the epicenter, in the city of Mulhouse, the earthquake was measured at only 1.3 on the Richter scale.
In Alsace, as in Switzerland or Germany, countries located on either side of the Rhine Ditch, earthquakes are not uncommon. On thirty to fifty kilometers, the movements of the earth’s crust are common, from where these repeated earthquakes.
No reports of damage have been reported for the moment in Alsace.
