Schools in the north of the country are the ones with the best results, both in terms of retention rates in Basic education and in levels of completion in Secondary education. The worst results are recorded in the Azores. According to data revealed yesterday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in all regions there are internal disparities.
The completion rate of secondary scientific humanistic courses was 91.7% in the 2020/2021 school year. North and Center schools were the two regions with results above the national rate: 94.3 and 91.8%, respectively. INE points out that there are internal disparities, namely with the municipalities on the coast of the northern region presenting higher values.
In Área Metropolitana de Lisboa, for example, which had a transition rate of 89%, only three of the 18 municipalities achieved a result above the national value: Alcochete (94%), Barreiro (92.5%) and Oeiras (92% ). In the Autonomous Region of the Azores – which recorded the worst result (88.5%) – five municipalities (Lajes do Pico, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Vila do Porto, Santa Cruz das Flores and Velas) achieved rates above the national level.
