Schools, transport, refineries… many disrupted or blocked sectors

In airports, it is mainly the strike of air traffic controllers that will cause disruptions and delays. One in five flights should be canceled at Orly. But at Roissy, there should be enough non-striking personnel to ensure the planned program, according to the general directorate of civil aviation.

In the Paris metro, only lines 1 and 14, which are automatic, will operate normally. The drivers of the other lines will provide one in two or one in four metros. Some lines will have closed stations and will only operate during peak hours. Bus and tram drivers will provide 80% of the service.

The SNCF announced a traffic “very strongly disturbed” with two TER out of ten in the provinces, from 25% to 50% of TGV depending on the axes, and one train out of three to one train out of ten in Ile-de-France. On the international side, Eurostar and Thalys traffic will operate almost normally, but traffic will be “strongly disturbed” between France and Switzerland (Lyria).

  • Public function
  • The strike notice concerns the entire public service, where the day of action on January 19 mobilized 28% of strikers among the 2.5 million state employees, according to the government. Town halls, such as that of Paris or Montreuil (Seine-Saint-Denis), have announced that they will keep their doors closed.

On January 19, public television and radio programs were largely disrupted at France Télévisions and Radio France.

The teachers’ unions foresee 50% of strikers among the teachers, from kindergarten to high school, on Tuesday. On January 19, according to the Ministry of National Education, the mobilization had resulted in a rate of striking teachers of 42.3% in primary school, and 34.6% in colleges and high schools.

The strike should be closely followed in the refineries, after already two days of work stoppage, on January 19 and 26: the refineries had operated on those days but fuel shipments had been blocked for 24 hours.
