The NATO secretary general considered this Wednesday that Germany’s decision to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine and authorize other countries to do so will help Kiev to “win and prevail as an independent nation”.
Jens Stoltenberg hailed the decision of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz “and Germany to provide Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks in consultation with other” North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member states and partners, according to a publication on the social network Twitter.
“At a critical moment in Russia’s war, these [tanques] can help Ukraine to defend itself, win and prevail as an independent nation”, added the secretary general of the military alliance in the same message.
Berlin announced today that it will authorize the deployment of these combat vehicles to Ukrainian territory to help Kiev repress the Russian offensive.
“This decision is in line with our well-known line of supporting Ukraine as best we can. We act internationally in a highly coordinated manner,” maintained the German chancellor, quoted by the executive’s spokesman, Steffen Hebestreit.
For weeks now, Germany has been under pressure from several countries that are part of NATO, namely the United States of America, to send these combat vehicles.
Other countries, for example Poland, could only send these German-made tanks to Ukraine with Berlin’s approval.
The Kremlin (Russian Presidency) has insisted that sending combat vehicles like these could be considered a NATO involvement in the conflict.
The possibility of the conflict escalating into a war of global proportions is making every decision by NATO to aid Kiev be weighed, so that it is not interpreted as a direct involvement of the military alliance in the invasion that the Russian Federation initiated some time ago. almost a year.
