The government counts 102,000 meals served on vacation since 2019, especially to needy students, but there are also chambers to guarantee this service.
Summer vacations begin, but thousands of students will continue to go to school for lunch, either due to economic shortages or because they participate in recreational activities that municipalities promote as a way of responding to families who have nowhere to leave their children.
The Ministry of Education guarantees that at least 36 schools will serve meals this month and, for now, two plan to do so in August. In the last three years, more than 102 thousand lunches were prepared during the holidays, especially for students with School Social Action. In the summer of last year, 36,000 meals were served; in 2020, a total of 41,315 were recorded; and, in 2019, 25,426 meals were distributed. The data, stresses the Government, refer only to establishments that still “have their cafeterias under concession, since, in directly managed cafeterias, the extension of this service does not require validation by the Ministry of Education”. In these accounts, initiatives launched by the municipalities, which include the provision of meals, are also left out.
