The US soul singer Aretha Franklin, who died in 2018, leads the current List of the greatest singers of all time of the music magazine “Rolling Stone”. It occupies the first of a total of 200 places in the ranking.
At the start of the new year, the newspaper published an updated list of the “200 greatest singers of all time”. Such a list was last published in 2008 – with the magazine’s 100 greatest singers of all time. Already controversial at the time: 99 of those listed came from English-speaking countries.
Second and third on the updated list are R&B star Whitney Houston and soul pioneer Sam Cooke, who sang one of the most important songs of the US civil rights movement with “A Change is Gonna Come”.
The authors wrote: “Before you start reading (and commenting), please remember that this is the list of the greatest singers, not the list of the greatest voices”.
List sparks controversy on social media
It was surprising that five-time Grammy winner Celine Dion didn’t even make it into the top 200. “With all due respect, not including Celine Dion, arguably the greatest vocal technician of all time, on this list is tantamount to treason,” music producer Jamie Lambert wrote on Twitter.
The British newspaper Daily Mail said: “There are no big surprises in the top ten on the Rolling Stone list, apart from the fact that Dion was overlooked”. The 54-year-old initially did not comment on this.
Especially on social media platforms like TikTok, the hashtag #rollingstone makes it clear that many users are not satisfied with the list and the selected rankings. Also fellow musicians like Justin Bieber, Jennifer Hudson, Janet Jackson, MadonnaSting or Dionne Warwick are missing from the list by fans.
