The German coach landed in Lisbon this Tuesday to formalize the bond that will link him to the Reds for two seasons and start the preparation for the new season.
Roger Schmidt arrived in Portugal at the end of the morning to live, officially, the first day as coach of Benfica.
“I am very happy to be in Lisbon. We want to play good football and be successful. It is one of the best clubs in the world. I am very excited to be part of this family and to start working”, said the coach, upon arrival.
About the new season, he admitted that “some adjustments to the team” are necessary, but he stressed that “there is a lot of quality” in the red squad.
Recalling the importance of pre-season “to prepare the team well”, Roger Schmidt admitted that it is “always important for all teams to qualify for the group stage of the Champions League, but there is still” some time until then.
The 55-year-old German coach arrives at the Eagles from the Dutch side of PSV, having also accumulated experience at Paderborn, Red Bull Salzburg, Bayer Leverkusen and Chinese side Beijing Guoan.
Schmidt takes charge of Benfica after a troubled season for the Reds, marked by the departure of Jorge Jesus, in December, and the absence of titles.
