Three children aged between two and six years were removed last Wednesday, by the PSP of Setúbal, from a house where they had lived with their parents, for over a year, in miserable conditions, on Rua Vale do Grou, in the fishing district. of Saint Nicholas. They were sick, they had bruises and they were transported that same day to the hospital where they were hospitalized for two.
Today, the children are in shelters, where they were sent by the Setúbal Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People (CPCJ), which took them away from their parents, he was 23 years old and she was 25. They were both identified by the PSP and are suspected of committing the crime of exposure or abandonment of minors.
The case was unknown to the authorities and it was the PSP, through the Criminal Investigation Squadron, that found the minors in this situation when notifying the father of the payment of a fine, at the request of the Court of Setúbal.
A mattress for five
The PSP, in a statement, describes that the place where the minors lived, in the center of the city, in addition to not having hygiene conditions, did not have an entrance door or windows to prevent the entry of the cold, with only a mattress on the floor where the five slept.
The three children were very dirty, they had bruises on their faces and one of them had a high fever. In view of the seriousness of the situation and the danger to which these children were exposed, the police called INEM, which assisted them and took them to the pediatric emergency room at Hospital de São Bernardo, in Setúbal. On medical advice, and despite having been discharged, the three children were hospitalized until Friday.
The CPCJ decided to remove the minors from their parents, transporting them with the collaboration of the PSP to the host location. As JN found out, one of the children is the couple’s daughter and the other two just the mother’s. Their father is unknown. This Monday, the couple was no longer in the abandoned house, which was empty.
Parish Council was unaware of case
The Parish Council of São Sebastião did not have this family flagged for urgent help. According to the mayor, Nuno Costa, there was no appeal or complaint and the situation was also not referenced in the Local Council of Social Action (CLAS) of Setúbal.
The family lived in the house for about a year.
