Damon Albarn’s band gave a concert in crescendo: it started tepidly, ended triumphantly. Yves Tumor served stew. Off! it’s short coffee to wake up. Primavera Sound said goodbye this Saturday.
There’s a 55-year-old Damon Albarn in a gray suit, the man of today, and there’s a Damon Albarn in a tracksuit and looking like a kid, the man he was when Blur came along in the early 1990s. present at the concert that closed the main stage on the last night of Primavera Sound 2023. And each of them starred in a very different part of the show.
Albarn in the gray suit was the one who entered the stage. He sang songs like “Popscene”, “There’s no other way” or “Tracy Jacks”. And everything seemed to be done with a delay, the songs dragged on, the public couldn’t help but feel the racket that formed on the grounds of Palco Porto, effect of rain and subsequent drying of the grass.
Then there is a kind of separator, which marks the farewell of the first Albarn – “End of a century”, “Country house” and “Parklife”, three tracks recognized by the public, who instinctively raised their cell phones (this is how the hits are recognized nowadays: when many people raise their cell phones). If it was these three themes, if it was the track suit that Albarn donned from “Girls & Boys”, we cannot say. The fact is that man has rejuvenated. Everything seemed more intense from there. Albarn got emotional, surrendered and thanked at length for the opportunity to “share our stupid songs”.
And the final stretch was glorious: the audience throwing themselves into the constitutive part of the show: dancing when they were supposed to dance, joining in the chorus when asked – and “Tender” was the ultimate expression of that delivery: the choir survived the end of the song and lasted until the beginning of “The narcissist”, a single taken from “The ballad of Darren”, the new Blur album that will be released on July 21st.
This sums up the return of one of the exponents of Britpop: quickly give the tracksuit to the man.
Extravagance Yves Tumor
Hours before, I meet Yves Tumor, a slender and oversized figure, full of spiked belts and bracelets, who makes a melting pot of experimental rock, noise and heavy metal. All embedded in filters and voicoders, all escaping a fixed catalogue. He got tired of grumbling about the volume of the sound and spent a good part of the concert letting himself be touched by the audience in the pit area. Pure extravagance number with loud sound.
An Italian, please
At the time of New Order, who saw the concert interrupted several times due to technical problems, Off! performed, who postponed the performance a few minutes, according to the vocalist, so that at least half a dozen people could arrive. About 200 or 300 arrived, no more, that’s what it takes to perform simultaneously with headliners. It’s a hardcore punk supergroup, with members of Black Flag or Circle Jerks, who sweat the wicks with their furious yard. They have all the ingredients: piercing guitar, rhythm section running the 100 meters, strangled voice protesting against the World. It is sipped like short coffee, to wake up and go on a journey.
