More than 4.7 million euros is the total deficit that the Porto City Council expects to have with the decentralization of competences in the area of Education, according to a document that the JN had access to.
The Porto Municipality contests the opposition note from the Ministry of Education to the Supreme Administrative Court on the injunction filed by Rui Moreira. The Government points out that the Chamber’s calculations are “absurd, unreasonable, without any adherence to reality”.
Councilor Fernando Paulo, responsible for Education in the Porto Chamber, points out to JN that the values, concluded by a study by the University of Minho, “are very restrained” and should be higher. The Chamber estimates that more than 67 thousand euros are needed for the conservation and maintenance of the EB 2/3 and Secondary schools. The Government estimates, for now, to allocate around 20 thousand euros to schools that have been taken over by local authorities since April 1, within the scope of decentralization.
