Elon Musk and hundreds of experts have joined a call for a pause in the development of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for at least six months so that the dangers of systems like GPT-4 can be properly studied.
The request is made through an open letter, published this Wednesday by the organization “Future of Life Institute”, which is signed by the main figures in the area, including Elon Musk, owner of Twitter and founder of SpaceX and Tesla, and the historian Yuval Noah Hariri. Among the letter’s signatories are Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak; members of Google’s AI lab, DeepMind; the director of Stability AI, Emad Mostaque, as well as American experts in AI, academics and Microsoft executive engineers. than ChatGPT 4, OpenAI’s model released this month, warning of “great risks to humanity”.
In the open letter, the “dangerous race” that has existed in the development of AI systems is criticized. “Over the last few months, we have seen artificial intelligence labs in a runaway race to develop and deploy increasingly powerful digital minds that even their own creators cannot understand or control,” the letter reads.
According to experts, if laboratories do not comply with this pause, “governments must intervene”, writes the British newspaper “The Guardian”. “This does not mean a pause in the development of AI in general, but rather just a retreat in this perilous race to create ever larger and unpredictable models”, add the experts.
