Istanbul Bus Station should be made earthquake resistant warning

Istanbul Arel University Head of Civil Engineering Department Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fatih Altan stated that the stirrup density at the junction points of the columns, beams and their bearing elements in the Greater Istanbul Bus Station is not in accordance with the “2018 Turkish Earthquake Building Regulations” and said, “It should be brought into compliance with this regulation.” said.

After the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş on February 6, while the discussions about the durability of the buildings in Istanbul continue, the latest situation of the Great Istanbul Bus Station, which is used by thousands of people every day, came to the agenda.

It was observed that the plaster of many columns and beams in the bus station in Esenler was poured, the iron inside was exposed, and some of them corroded and rusted over time.

prof. Dr. Altan, in his statement, said that as seen in the photographs and images, steel bars, parts called rebars and protective concrete layers, which are carriers, were peeled off.

Stating that 4-5 cm concrete coating was made on the outside to prevent corrosion of the iron, Prof. Dr. Altan said, “We call this concrete layer rust. This layer has disappeared from here. The iron has also become visible to the eye. Because of this, iron oxidizes as it comes into contact with oxygen. he said.

prof. Dr. Altan stated that if precautions are not taken, the diameter of the corroded iron will decrease day by day and it will lose its bearing capacity, and that the iron can be strengthened as soon as possible with the work to be done, at least the concrete coating should be done and the contact of the iron with the air should be cut off.

“It needs to be reinforced again according to the new regulation”

Underlining that they also pay attention to the junction points in old buildings, Altan said, “It is seen that the stirrup frequency at the junction points of columns, beams and their bearing elements does not comply with the ‘2018 Turkish Earthquake Building Regulations. According to the new regulation, it should be reinforced, strengthened and become useful. used the phrases.

prof. Dr. Altan said that structures such as the Great Istanbul Bus Station also wear out over time due to the dynamic loads they receive.

Stating that corrosion can be encountered in these special structures when they are not maintained, Altan made the following assessment:

“It poses a risk for the earthquake with its current situation. We want our carriers to be made according to the project and to continue according to the project. Because there is a project phase and application phase of production, and a maintenance phase. We need to complete all three of them. The project and implementation phase of this structure. “It has passed. There are problems in the maintenance phase. It should be routinely maintained as soon as possible, first it should be strengthened and improved. Then the maintenance should continue on a routine basis so that the service life can be extended.”
