Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine: due to the destruction of hydroelectric power plants, fields in the south may become deserts
As early as next year, agricultural fields in southern Ukraine may turn into deserts. This was warned by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food (Ministry of Agrarian Policy) of Ukraine.
The department indicated that such a situation could arise due to the disappearance of the Kakhovka reservoir after the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. They explained that now from 30 to 94 percent of irrigation systems in the territories of Dnepropetrovsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions controlled by Kyiv are now left without a source of water.
In addition, the fisheries industry has also been hit – the death of fry and adults is already being recorded. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy explained that spawning had just ended, and as a result of a drop in the water level in the reservoir, the fertilized eggs would dry out.
Kakhovskaya HPP was damaged on the night of June 6. As a result of numerous impacts, the dam support was damaged, after which the flooding of the territories began. Both Ukrainian and Russian officials say the station is beyond repair.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier that this state of emergency could cause problems with drinking water in the Dnipropetrovsk region and in the territories of Zaporozhye and Kherson regions controlled by Kyiv.
