(CNN Spanish) — The judge of the Yaguachi Multi-competent Judicial Unit, Erick Rodríguez, admitted a request for precautionary measures in favor of the former vice president of Ecuador, Jorge Glas, who is serving two sentences for corruption.
In the resolution, Judge Rodríguez orders the return of the political participation rights to “elect and be elected” and to “participate in matters of public interest” in favor of Glas, so that he can participate in the early elections next year. August 20 in Ecuador.
In addition, it orders the lifting of any impediment imposed on Glas to hold a position in the public sector.
“Respecting their constitutional rights to participate in electing and being elected in relation to the progressivity of the exercise of rights, to due process in compliance with the norms and rights of the parties and the right to defense; equality and non-discrimination; and life project ”, specifies the judicial resolution.
In this way, Judge Rodríguez orders the National Electoral Council to restore Glas’s rights to political participation and his data on the electoral roll.
CNN requested a response from the State Attorney General’s Office that led the legal proceedings against Jorge Glas and is awaiting a response. He is also trying to reach the former vice president’s attorney.
On November 28, 2022, former Vice President Glas was released from prison after serving five years in prison after being sentenced for corruption crimes.
Glas was serving two sentences of six and eight years in prison for crimes of illicit association and aggravated bribery, respectively, linked to the bribery plot in the Odebrecht case. Glas has denied these accusations, claims that he was sentenced “without evidence” and that he is the victim of political persecution.
The former vice president has been in prison since the end of 2017 and served most of his sentence in the Latacunga prison, located an hour and a half from Quito. In May of this year he was transferred from Latacunga to Quito to serve his sentence in “prison number 4”, a prison north of the city, where several former officials are being prosecuted for corruption or crimes against the public administration.
