Former head of operations of the Military Police of the Federal District is arrested for investigations into coup acts on January 8 in Brazil

(CNN Spanish) — In Brazil, this Tuesday the fifth phase of Operation Lesa Patria was completed with three orders of temporary detention, one of preventive detention, as well as six search and apprehension orders carried out by the Federal Police.

In total, there are 17 preventive detention orders and 3 temporary detention orders against suspects of having participated, financed, encouraged or omitted their responsibility in the coup attempt in Brazil on January 8. There have also been 37 search and arrest warrants.

Among the detainees this Tuesday is the colonel of the Military Police of the Federal District Jorge Eduardo Naime Barreto, who was chief of operations of the body, according to Agencia Brasil. CNN has not yet had access to the detailed mandate of each detainee or the procedure that these arrests will follow.

The crimes investigated are the violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, qualified damage, criminal association, incitement to crime, destruction and deterioration or uselessness of protected assets.

On January 8 in Brasilia, followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro entered the Plaza of the Three Powers, invaded and seriously destroyed the National Congress, the Supreme Court and the Planalto Palace, the seat of the country’s government. Investigations continue to determine the responsibility of each one of the participants in the events, both those who attacked public buildings, those who financed or promoted the acts and those who, by neglecting their positions of responsibility, made it possible for them to take place.

The Ministry of Justice has received more than 107,000 emails from the population with complaints from participants in anti-democratic acts. They cite 50,000 individuals and nearly 14,000 organizations that allegedly financed or actually participated in terrorist acts.
