In 2003 he became personal assistant to then-Cardinal Karl Ratzinger, and after his election as Pope in 2005 he became his private secretary. He retained this position even after Benedict’s resignation.
A large funeral service is planned for next Thursday, to which the German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, among others, is expected. Following this, Benedict XVI. then buried in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica.
