Eye surgeons from 19 countries, including Turkish physicians, attended the Vitreoretinal Surgery Congress, which was held for the 23rd time in Tirieste, Italy this year.
The participants of the international congress watched the surgery performed under the chairmanship of Specialist Doctor Mehmet Önen from Ankara Bilkent City Hospital.
A 61-year-old female patient with 80 percent vision loss in her left eye underwent surgery to remove the gel-like substance in the back of the eye, which is called “vitrectomy” in medicine, and to eliminate the problems in the retina.
It can be seen in all age groups
In his statement to the AA correspondent, Önen stated that this problem is a serious health problem that causes permanent vision loss, and said, “It is a disease that results in loss of vision when the retinal layer that allows us to see is separated from where it should be. It is possible to treat it with vitreoretinal surgery, the patient regains vision. Some special instruments We use it for that.” said.
Explaining that this problem is not congenital, it can be seen in all age groups, Önen explained that high myopia, some genetic diseases and trauma can cause the disease. Önen said, “The most important thing is that some tears in the eye, flashes of light, and the feeling of flying in the eye are the most important findings. In case of any of these, an emergency physician should be consulted.” warned.
“The surgical potential and knowledge of Turkish physicians is extremely high”
Önen noted that in “specialty vitreoretinal surgery”, the patient’s eye is entered by making three small holes, the layer that provides vision is placed in its place from where it was separated and glued with a laser.
Pointing out that the difference of this method from standard surgery is that the holes opened into the eye are very small, Önen said that the more effective method in children increases the rate of recovery and the patients are discharged in a short time.
Önen stated that Turkish physicians come to the fore in eye surgery, as they do in many other fields of medicine, adding, “The surgical potential and knowledge of Turkish physicians is extremely high. he said.
Noting that the surgery in Turkey was watched live from the congress in Italy, Önen said, “We were asked to convey our experiences live to an international congress. We will have the chance to convey our experiences to the physicians there. This is very important for our country and for our hospital, we are proud.” used his statements.
Önen said that within the scope of the congress, live surgical applications will be made from Russia, France and Italy as well as Turkey.
