Scientists explained whether we should expect natural disasters in the capital.
The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra continues to incite panic about the eviction of UOC MP monks. Some believers and priests assure that as soon as the monks leave the Lavra, various cataclysms await Kyiv: floods, earthquakes, breach of the Kyiv Sea dam, etc.
The TSN.ua website asked scientists whether such a development is real.
Will Kyiv sink?
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center assured TSN.ua that they are monitoring the situation, and no serious cataclysms are expected.
“In the spring of 2023, the usual seasonal irrigation on the upper Dnieper is expected, but it will by no means threaten the capital with a flood”, – we were told in Hydrometeorological centers.
Earthquakes and breach of the Kyiv dam
Scientists say that there is no high danger from earthquakes in Kyiv. And that natural cataclysms are hardly related to the events in the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
“Earthquakes are not dangerous for undamaged and normally built houses. I can assure you that there is no high danger from earthquakes in Kyiv. Also there is no threat to the dam of the Kyiv Sea either. And those things that man himself generates, including the undermining of a dam or something else, no longer depend on nature. Therefore, I can assure you that everything will be fine with the dam of the Kyiv Sea. Often, as an example, they cite the detonation of the DniproGES dam during the war, but in order to blow it up and cause a powerful wave, explosives must be brought there by wagons. No one needs it now,” TSN.ua explains Oleksandr Kendzera, director of the Institute of Geophysics named after Saturday of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
He adds that there are no harbingers of the approach, any cataclysms.
“Currently, we do not observe any harbingers of cataclysms in Ukraine. Although, once upon a time, earthquakes, landslides or other dangerous phenomena occurred without harbingers. But in most cases, nature warns us of their approach. For example, that there will be a strong earthquake. Harbingers exist , but they are mainly used by geophysics specialists. They are not for the general public and there are more than 160 of them. One of them is an unusual hum, which was recorded in the Odesa region,” the scientist says.
Oleksandr Kendzera notes that even if all 160 harbingers appear, this will not mean that a strong earthquake will necessarily occur.
“The tension can be released with the help of a large number of small earthquakes or one large one. And the sum of the energy of small earthquakes will be equal to the energy of a large earthquake. But which of them will happen – no one will ever tell you. Because, for example, in the Vrancha zone, earthquakes occur at depth from 140 to 170 kilometers, and the deepest well on our planet is 11 kilometers long. So, unfortunately, it is impossible to say exactly what is happening at such a depth. Therefore, geophysicists understand that this is not a reliable way of predicting with the help of harbingers.” – explains Oleksandr Kendzera.
He adds that there have been cases in history when people have guessed the exact date of an earthquake, but the key word here is “guessed” and not known for sure.
“Every year on our planet there are from 10 to 15 sufficiently powerful earthquakes. Moreover, there are those that can wipe out the entire city from the face of the earth, if the buildings in it are not earthquake-resistant. Therefore, I would recommend those who spread such rumors to read what happens for sins, especially for such a grave one as deception,” says the scientist.
It will be recalled that scientists from NASA warn that due to global warming, the risk of droughts and floods has increased throughout the world.
