The CDU of Braga said, this Thursday, that “the candidacy process for European Capital of Culture confirmed the need for a real commitment to the democratization of Culture, which defends local cultural agents and creates conditions for a wide exercise and generalized access the culture”.
“The application included a wide-ranging work and community involvement, which identified existing limitations, the need for investments in spaces, equipment and support for artistic creation, contributing to greater attention to Culture, generating expectations that cannot be frustrated” , he says, in a statement, regarding the attribution of Évora to the European Capital in 2027.
In the opinion of the CDU, “the application also resulted, for the first time in Braga, in the definition and public presentation of a municipal strategy for cultural activity with a horizon of 2030, a document that cannot be discarded due to the lack of the European title, before, should be a structural guide for the implementation of the policies that Braga needs”.
“Braga lost the title, but it can gain a permanent and solid direction in cultural activity. That is what is needed at this moment”, he points out.
For the Unitarian Democratic Coalition (PCP and Os Verdes), “the candidacy confirmed that the city has the conditions and means to progress in terms of cultural production and enjoyment, an effort to which the CDU will continue to contribute in its daily action and in institutional bodies “.
Emphasizing that the municipality will benefit, in the coming years, from the status of Portuguese Capital of Culture, “publicly expresses a greeting to the team and technicians, cultural agents and citizens who were actively involved in the application process, seeking to promote culture, arts, traditions, organizations and institutions of the city”.
