A 53-year-old man was in serious condition this Sunday afternoon, in a collision between the car he was driving and a train, at a guarded level crossing on the Minho Line, in S. Pedro da Torre, Valença.
According to the commander of the local fire brigade, Armindo Marques, the alert was received around 5.50 pm, the line remains cut off and the victim was transported to the hospital in Braga by the SIV in Valença.
“The train collided with a car and the front wheels ended up derailing with the car underneath. It was at a level crossing with an electronic system. According to witnesses at the scene, the sound signals and the barriers were working”, declared commander Armindo Marques . “When we arrived at the site the barriers were still down and the sound signals were working. What happened we don’t know”, he added.
The victim is a resident of S. Pedro da Torre. A team of psychologists from INEM was mobilized to the site to assist their families,
An aerial means was activated to transport the victim, which ended up not being used. There were 41 operators with 15 vehicles from the Valença and Vila Nova de Cerveira Firefighters, VMER from Viana do Castelo, members of the Chamber and Civil Protection from Valença.
