A 61-year-old man set fire to his house in Alcochete to kill his partner after several episodes of domestic violence and an argument between the two on Sunday. The woman survived and the man was eventually taken to the hospital, where he is in the psychiatric ward.
The fire resulted in five injuries, one with serious injuries. The victims, including the suspect, were taken to the hospitals of Santa Maria and São José, in Lisbon. The municipal housing was left without conditions of habitability, informed the civil protection of Setúbal.
From what JN found out, the suspect has a history of domestic violence against his partner and problems with alcoholism, which have increased in the last six months. The two argued this Sunday and this Thursday, the suspect decided to set fire to the municipal house where he lives with his wife and the motorcycle itself.
The alert was given at 2:45 pm and the Alcochete firefighters rushed to the scene, on Rua Capitão Salgueiro Maia, who managed to extinguish the flames and found the suspect still at the scene inanimate. The man was taken to hospital to receive treatment for his injuries and was later admitted for psychiatric evaluation. Depending on the outcome of the evaluation, he will be detained for attempted murder by the Setúbal Judiciary Police if he is discharged or he will be compulsively hospitalized. In this last scenario, the internment will have to have the approval of a court, taking into account that a criminal investigation is going on in the case.
Thirty-five elements were involved in the theater of operations, supported by 16 firefighters from Alcochete, as well as the GNR, INEM and the Judiciary Police of Setúbal.
