Benfica denied having refused to receive the champion’s trophy at the João Rocha Pavilion. Benfiquistas defend that they only refused to participate in the delivery ceremony as a sign of protest with the Portuguese Basketball Federation.
“Our team did not participate in the trophy delivery ceremony, opting to celebrate with the Benfiquistas in Luz, who attended in good numbers. Contrary to what was broadcast, Sport Lisboa e Benfica did not refuse to hand over the trophy, even appointing two representatives for the purpose. He just did not want to participate in the handover ceremony in protest for a “discriminatory and unacceptable behavior” by the Disciplinary Board”, can be read in the publication.
It should be remembered that this case has to do with the episode that occurred with Travante Williams, a Sporting player, who allegedly attacked an authority agent during the break of the penultimate match of this round, without suffering any consequences. Benfica was displeased with this situation and refused to go up to the stage set up for the purpose, when the title of champion was consecrated at Pavilhão João Rocha.
