At least one person has died and four more have been injured in a machete attack that occurred in several churches in Algeciras (Cádiz) after 8:00 p.m. this Wednesday. According to sources from the Ministry of the Interior, a person has staged an attack with a knife, killing one person and injuring others. The man has been arrested and is in the custody of the National Police. One of the attacks occurred in a church in the Plaza Alta, in the center of the city, inside which there was a seriously injured person, while the person who was killed, the sacristan, was outside.

The facts are being investigated and analyzed, without it being possible for the moment to determine the nature of the attack, according to Interior sources. However, the Prosecutor’s Office of the National Court assumes it as an alleged terrorist attack, reports from the public ministry. Police sources warn of the confusion that has existed so far and point out that there have been attacks “at least in two churches.” The same sources confirm that the attacker was undocumented, but “it seems that he is of Moroccan origin.”

A priest from Algeciras has described the events as follows: “The attacker first went to the parish of San Isidro, where he attacked a person. And, later, he went to the church in the Plaza de la Palma, where he ran into the sacristan in the street and attacked him right there, where he was left on the ground. Subsequently, he seemed to go to the Church of Our Lady of Europe, but I no longer know if he has arrived ”. All the churches are located in the center of the city, with 122,000 inhabitants.

For his part, the parish priest of the Church of La Palma, Juan José Marina, who was outside the temple at the time, qualifies: “According to what they tell me, a Muslim has entered and has begun to throw things off the altar. Then the sacristan tried to stop him, and the first attack with the knife was inside the church. The poor man has gone out into the street asking for help, and there he has been attacked again, in the square. The attacker came from the Church of San Isidro and there he attacked a Salesian, also a comrade, who was giving mass at the time”.

The 112 Andalusia Emergency service has received numerous notices from individuals about the event, but the toilets have not been able to do anything to save the life of the victim and it has been the Local Police that has confirmed the death. The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Manuel Moreno, has lamented the events through Twitter: “Terrible and heartbreaking. A sacristan has been murdered and at least one other priest has been injured in an attack that took place in Algeciras. Prudence, the facts are being investigated.” The Muslim Community has also sent a statement of rejection.

    I strongly condemn the crime.

Intolerance will never have a place in our society.
