67-year-old Hanna Plykhchynska was made famous all over the world by the Polish photographer Jerzy Nowytskyi. For the sake of Lana’s cow, a woman risks her life every day, because you can’t give livestock a minesweeper. “I take it, put down the stick, because that’s what the policeman told me. I mark where it is, and then I call him, he comes and takes it. And such small ones, I collect them myself”, – says the woman about the wreckage that has to be found.
Hanna and Lana waited out the hostilities in Cherkasy region, and then returned to Stepova Dolyna, a village on the border of the Mykolaiv and Kherson regions. The Russians shelled him continuously for 9 months. Not a single surviving house, nearby – broken equipment. There are almost no people left in Stepova Dolyna, but Hanna has both poultry and fresh greens in her garden. “It’s scary, of course. I’m leaving, it squealed, well, I stopped and looked to see what it was,” says the woman.
The land, which does not necessarily have, but may have mines, is called potentially contaminated with explosive objects. Now such lands are about thirty percent of the territory of Ukraine. During the last meeting of the Permanent Council of the OSCE, the permanent representative of Ukraine to international organizations in Vienna Yevhen Tsimbalyuk said that these lands could feed 80 million people. If the main problem of the Ukrainian peasants remained global warming and other weather problems, and not pieces of Russian shells or landmines.
