Benfica repudiated the accusations made by Miguel Afonso, a member of Sporting’s Board of Directors, after the third game of the national roller hockey championship final, warning that it cannot remain “untouched by the competent authorities”.
“It is unacceptable, first of all, the way in which Miguel Afonso attacked Sport Lisboa e Benfica and those responsible in the press conference after the match last Wednesday, June 14, conveying the idea that Sporting was harmed by the refereeing team”, reacted the red club, in a statement.
Miguel Afonso accused his Lisbon rival of putting pressure on the referees during half-time in the match, played in the main pavilion of Estádio da Luz, which Benfica won 4-2, leaving it one triumph away from being crowned Portuguese champions for the 24th time.
“Now that the circus of hypocrisy is over, I want to say that the games we’ve been playing in this field have been a real disgust”, criticized the leonine leader, accusing Benfica of thinking “that anything goes to win”.
Clube da Luz considered that “Miguel Afonso’s inflammatory speech goes beyond all limits and cannot be left untouched by the competent authorities”, recalling that “the member of Sporting’s Board of Directors was arrested in game five of the semi-final of the championship of the past era”.
“We respect all our opponents and we will not allow them to try to whitewash our victories with messages completely distorted from reality, even more so through an element that has no moral authority to do so”, said Benfica.
The fourth meeting of the final, which is led by Benfica by 2-1, is scheduled for Sunday, at Pavilhão João Rocha, and, if necessary, the fifth meeting will take place on June 21 (Wednesday), in Luz.
